Thank you for visiting the SMART Lab. Our research focuses on monitoring the structural health of bridges and other infrastructure using wireless sensor networks and deep neural networks.

We are located in Youngstown, in Northeast Ohio—about halfway between Chicago and New York City, and just an hour’s drive from either Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Youngstown sits at the heart of the Mahoning Valley, once known as the “Steel Valley,” which was a major center for steel production (thanks to its access to Lake Erie ports). The Mahoning River, which runs through the valley, was once lined with 25 miles of steel mills.

Although the mills are long gone, the people of Youngstown remain resilient and determined. YSU plays a vital role in the region’s renewal by producing skilled graduates and staying actively involved in the community.
